Sweet Sugar Treats
When it comes to cupcakes we’ve long been fans of Sweet Sugar Treats in Beaconsfield, in the south-east of Melbourne. Regularly found in local artisan food markets (eg Healesville and Lardner Park), Sweet Sugar Treats provide a wide range of cakes, cupcakes, cookies and macarons.
There’s a wide range of bespoke and handcrafted goodies that would provide the finishing touch on a special occasion or corporate event (client gifts are a speciality).
As a 2016 ABIA Wedding Cake Design Finalist, Sweet Sugar Treats has an excellent reputation for detail, flavour and customer satisfaction. If you go all-in on the Rolls Royce of Cupcakes, you will be treated to a both a vision of beauty and a smorgasbord of sweet loveliness.

Brunetti Oro
Three Locations: 250 Flinders Lane, Melbourne 3000; 48-54 Weston Street, Brunswick 3056; Level 3, Myer Melbourne Bourke St, 3000 / Tel: (03) 9069 3169
Cakes can be ordered online or instore at Flinders Lane or at Myer Melbourne.
Brunetti cafes and restaurants have been a Melbourne institution for many decades. Known for excellent coffee, authentic gelato and spectacular cakes transported in their familiar red takeaway boxes, the Brunetti family split their hospitality chain in 2021 into Brunetti Oro and Brunetti Classico.
Brunetti Oro continues on the cake tradition from their much-loved cafe in Flinders Lane. There’s a fantastic range to choose from that will satisfy both young and old, both conservative and bold. Many are traditional cake recipes, refined over the years, and now brightened with the addition of a modern twist.
Check out the Hazelnut Millefoglie, the passion fruit and lemon tarts with creme fraiche, and the appel strudel for a winter pep-up.
The Mixed Berry Charlotte is our preferred choice for a birthday cake. And, pleasingly, there are many gluten-free options for special occasion celebrations too.
Brunetti Or’s new online store makes ordering sweet treats remarkably easy. It’s as simple as choosing your special celebration cake with a quick and simple check out and it will be delivered directly to you.
The cakes are made in true Italian tradition with high-quality ingredients, attention to detail and fine craftsmanship.
Laurent Bakery
Location: Multiple locations across Melbourne
When it comes to cake delivery Melbourne has a not-so-secret weapon when compared to other Australian cities: Laurent Bakery.
Since opening his first bakery in 1993, Laurent Boillon has seen his cake shops and dessert empire spread across the city.
Laurent Bakery promises pastries, pastisserie and breads that are ‘French inspired’ and it’s clearly a formula that appeals to foodie Melburnians.
This much-loved, afternoon tea institution offers a full catering menu, for those planning a high tea at home. Popular sweet treats include their Macarons, Chocolate Eclair, Lemon Meringue and – my personal weakness – Seasonal Mixed Fruit Tarts.
If you don’t have much of a sweet tooth – what’s wrong with you?! – Laurent Bakery also prepare plenty of savoury options. From a range of Quiches, through to Mini Croissants and onto filled Rolls, this is a one-stop-shop for all your party food needs.
And let’s not forget their stunning cakes.
Exquisite creations like their fabulous Mietta (see above). This knock-out cake combines chocolate sponge, cream rich with Bailey’s Irish Cream, lush mocha mousse, and the textural wonder of crunchy hazelnut praline. This really is a special occasion cake.
And Laurent Bakery really is a special cake shop.
Update: The first Croissant Bar by Laurent has opened in the Chadstone Shopping Centre selling – you’ve guessed it – croissants. A dozen types of sweet and savoury croissants, to be exact.
If you love to bake at home, you’ll adore this impressive 200 Piece Cake Decorating Supplies Kit for Beginners. It has everything you need to turn out stunning creations, from piping tips to spatulas and a cake leveler.

Louisa Morris Cakes
Location: Foord St, Wahgunyah, VIC, Australia, Victoria / Tel: 0402 722 925 / Order online
Located 3 hours north of Melbourne in Wahgunyah, resides the multi-award winning artisinal cake maker, Louisa Morris.
Established in 1997, Louisa Morris Cakes is famous for producing wonderful cakes, puddings, pickles and preserves. And whilst a quick drive to pick up a cupcake or two might be out of the question for most of us, there is a convenient online store that will deliver all over Victoria.
Owner-operator, Louisa Morris, is a qualified chef and baker. She has made many fantastic special-event cakes (wedding, christening, birthday and anniversary) for families in the north east of Victoria and beyond for more than two decades.
Louisa has won many awards over the journey, including Champion Preserve at the Hobart fine food awards in 2013, Gold at the Melbourne Fine Food Awards in 2014 and silver at the 2019 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.
The business sources local ingredients and produce from only the best farms within the Hume Murray Food Bowl of Victoria.
Louisa’s cakes, christmas puddings, jams, curds, caramels, preserves, fruit cakes, macarons and wedding cakes are all handmade made in small batches using French-inspired techniques, chef secrets and family recipes.
And the Christmas puddings, panaforte and mince tarts are spectacular.
Aside from the online store, Louisa’s output can be found in a number of Farmers Markets in Victoria’s north-east (eg. Albury Wodonga Farmers Market and Wangaratta Farmers Market).
There’s always a great range of gluten free treats for those with dietary restrictions – we’ve seen the following range of gluten and dairy-free options: Boston buns, panaforte, donuts, cinnamon scrolls, brownies, carrot cakes, bee stings, salted caramel brownies, brioche Nutella doughnuts, hazelnut brioche scrolls, white chocolate raspberry and macadamia blondies. (Note: the gluten-free brownies have won awards).
Ice Cream Social

Brunswick and Thornbury stores are open for pick-ups and will also deliver to Melbourne metro suburbs. The Castlemaine store is pick-up only.

As befits its name, the handmade ice cream is deliciously good – very creamy and made from organic local milk.
The cakes are quirky and crafted with care from local ingredients by true artisans. They have a lovingly-prepared, homemade feel to them and the Whole Ice Cream Cake is predictably yummy.
We can also recommend the Blum’s Coffee Cake and the Lemon Cream Tart with Roast Rhubarb.
Want a conversation starter? Then order a Filthy Rat Bag Cake and ponder the rude cartoon.
Vegans are catered for with at least three vegan options; we have tasted the Vegan Hummingbird Cake and it was delish.

Then there’s the luscious Vanilla Slice, oozing with Vanilla Pastry Cream Filling and decorated with White Chocolate and Ganache lines.
Before they launched Levain Doughnuts, the founders started Jamm’d Dessert Bar – so these folks know a thing or 2 about catering. And cake delivery Melbourne-wide.

Your cake from Jessicakes can be made in a size to suit the number of guests you are expecting at your special occasion. When a cake cannot be made smaller without compromising the chosen design, tiers made of polystyrene can be added.
Jessicakes is an artisan cake-maker of great imagination and skill. We can highly recommend.
Linger Cafe
Location: 101 Bowen St, Camberwell, VIC 3124 / Tel: 0427 800 018
Linger Cafe is a well-kept local secret in Camberwell.
On leafy Bowen Street, inside an old church building, is the Linger Patisserie Cafe.
The cafe itself does breakfast, lunch and everything in between. The Chilli Scrambled Eggs are a personal favourite and the Tijuana Bennedict is a fun spin on a classic with pulled pork and chipotle hollandaise. There’s an Asian influence that adds interest to the menu. The Gangnam Style Burger complete with kimchi is a sure-fire winner.
But enough of all that. It’s the patisserie part of the business that we’re supposed to be covering in this piece.
The team at Linger Cafe specialise in Asian-accented baked fancies. The chilled cabinet in the cafe quickly sells out of their much-loved Watermelon Cake and their incredibly cute Animal Set. These pure white Rabbit cakes are beyond adorable – so lovely, in fact, that I wouldn’t be able to bring myself to eat one!
For a full review of Linger Cafe, please see here.
For larger bakes such as their stunning Like The Rose and Flower Love Buttercream cakes, take a look at their website. Cakes can be ordered online as long as you give Linger Cafe two days notice. And at present, it’s pick up only.
Beatrix Bakes
Location: 688 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne 3051 / Tel: 0403 698 836. Eat-in or takeaway only. No made-to-order cakes or deliveries.
Established for more than a decade, in a small corner store in North Melbourne, owner Natalie Paull has been baking delicious cakes, meringues, pastries and sweet treats with small-business passion and intensity.
This is your small-scale, artisinal, craftsperson type of operation. The output feels, looks and tastes like it was made locally by a someone who cares.
Beatrix Bakes does not deliver or take orders and so you’ll have to visit the North Melbourne store to understand its appeal. The earlier you turn up, the better the choice will be.
There are no vegan options, unfortunately. Natalie is on record as saying that she hasn’t baked one good enough to put her name to, which we feel is a bit of a cop-out. However, there is a flourless chocolate cake that will work as a gluten-free dessert.
Fancy trying your hand at baking? Then consider Natalie’s cookbook Beatrix Bakes – it has run to several print runs.
Beatrix Bakes is no longer a well-kept secret. The once-small operation is now well-known, and no longer the preserve of locals and foodie-types. For me, it has lost some of its soul and charm. Expect queues at peak times.
Editor’s Note: August 2022 – The Age is reporting that the Beatrix Bakes shop will soon close as the owner, Natalie Paull, concentrates on e-commerce cake orders from her website and on selling more copies of her cookbooks.
Tarts Anon

Looking for that perfect gift for the person who seems to have everything? See if our Gift Guide can inspire you.
This smart little business in increasingly hip Cremorne has a fashionably minimal, but warm, shop at the front and a bustling kitchen out the back. And it is out the back that the pastry magic happens.
From their totally addictive Signature Pear Tart with its marzipan fragrance to the silky custard smoothness of its Berry & Lemon Cheesecake Tart, everything if sublime.
We’ve tried a few of Tarts Anon fabulous creations and all of them feature perfectly balanced fillings held in biscuit-crisp, delicious pastry.
For a full review of Tarts Anon, click here.
On our last trip, we loved the rich crunch and cocoa depth of the Chocolate Orange & Whiskied Pecan Tart. In contrast, the Christmas Special – Eggnog & Fruit Mince – had a satiny eggnog-flavoured custard on a thin layer of luscious fruit mince jam. Yum!
For those who want to take away dessert, you can order in advance on the Tarts Anon website and pick up from the shop.
We thoroughly recommend that you do!
Nikos Cakes
Location: 25 Portman St, Oakleigh, VIC 3166 Ph: (03) 9569 6338 & 254-262 Wingrove St, Fairfield, VIC 3078 Ph: (03) 9482 159
Although many an Oakleigh resident frequents Nikos Cakes for their Greek Sweets, this isn’t the only thing on offer.
Follow the sugar-scented air into either of Nikos outlets and you’ll find both a busy cafe and utterly tempting array of cakes and confectionery creations. Whilst Birthday Cakes and Wedding Cakes have been a speciality for years, the team of skilled bakers know how to adapt to current trends. A case in point is the wide selection of both Baby Shower cakes and Gender Reveal cakes.
Of course, Nikos Cakes do some truly amazing Novelty Cakes as well. We love the Classic Porsche and the Gin and Tonic designs on their website.
Finally, if you can’t make it to either Oakleigh or Fairfield, don’t fret. They can get your show-stopper to you, upon request. Why else would we have Nikos Cakes on our cake delivery Melbourne guide.
