A life without cake. Difficult to imagine, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t have to be this way if you’re in Melbourne and willing to embrace the magic of home cake, dessert and cupcake delivery.

The midnight cupcake treat, morning pick-me-up chocolate éclair and mid-afternoon croissant are more solo affairs, like the best guilty secrets.

Whatever your rationale, we’ve got you covered for cake delivery and dessert takeaway services in Melbourne. Read on to discover cakes and sweet delights that you never knew existed, but now must be tasted.

Cakes can be ordered online or instore at Flinders Lane or at Myer Melbourne.

Brunetti cafes and restaurants have been a Melbourne institution for many decades. Known for excellent coffee, authentic gelato and spectacular cakes transported in their familiar red takeaway boxes, the Brunetti family split their hospitality chain in 2021 into Brunetti Oro and Brunetti Classico.

Brunetti Oro continues on the cake tradition from their much-loved cafe in Flinders Lane. There’s a fantastic range to choose from that will satisfy both young and old, both conservative and bold. Many are traditional cake recipes, refined over the years, and now brightened with the addition of a modern twist.

Check out the Hazelnut Millefoglie, the passion fruit and lemon tarts with creme fraiche, and the appel strudel for a winter pep-up.

The Mixed Berry Charlotte is our preferred choice for a birthday cake. And, pleasingly, there are many gluten-free options for special occasion celebrations too.

Brunetti Or’s new online store makes ordering sweet treats remarkably easy. It’s as simple as choosing your special celebration cake with a quick and simple check out and it will be delivered directly to you.

The cakes are made in true Italian tradition with high-quality ingredients, attention to detail and fine craftsmanship.

Louisa Morris Cakes

Location: Foord St, Wahgunyah, VIC, Australia, Victoria / Tel: 0402 722 925 / Order online

Located 3 hours north of Melbourne in Wahgunyah, resides the multi-award winning artisinal cake maker, Louisa Morris.

Established in 1997, Louisa Morris Cakes is famous for producing wonderful cakes, puddings, pickles and preserves. And whilst a quick drive to pick up a cupcake or two might be out of the question for most of us, there is a convenient online store that will deliver all over Victoria.

Louisa Morris macarons

Owner-operator, Louisa Morris, is a qualified chef and baker. She has made many fantastic special-event cakes (wedding, christening, birthday and anniversary) for families in the north east of Victoria and beyond for more than two decades.

Louisa has won many awards over the journey, including Champion Preserve at the Hobart fine food awards in 2013, Gold at the Melbourne Fine Food Awards in 2014 and silver at the 2019 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.

The business sources local ingredients and produce from only the best farms within the Hume Murray Food Bowl of Victoria.

Louisa’s cakes, christmas puddings, jams, curds, caramels, preserves, fruit cakes, macarons and wedding cakes are all handmade made in small batches using French-inspired techniques, chef secrets and family recipes.

And the Christmas puddings, panaforte and mince tarts are spectacular.

Aside from the online store, Louisa’s output can be found in a number of Farmers Markets in Victoria’s north-east (eg. Albury Wodonga Farmers Market and Wangaratta Farmers Market).

There’s always a great range of gluten free treats for those with dietary restrictions – we’ve seen the following range of gluten and dairy-free options: Boston buns, panaforte, donuts, cinnamon scrolls, brownies, carrot cakes, bee stings, salted caramel brownies, brioche Nutella doughnuts, hazelnut brioche scrolls, white chocolate raspberry and macadamia blondies. (Note: the gluten-free brownies have won awards).

Ice Cream Social

Three Locations: 421 Sydney Road, Brunswick 3056; 907 High Street, Thornbury 3071; The Mill, 9 Walker Street, Castlemaine 3450

Brunswick and Thornbury stores are open for pick-ups and will also deliver to Melbourne metro suburbs. The Castlemaine store is pick-up only.

With three friendly shops and a funky, retro icecream van (available for party hire), Ice cream Social is a gem of a find in the Melbourne northern suburbs. Cakes can be ordered in advance (you should allow 2 days notice for pick-ups) and delivery orders need to placed by 10pm on Monday.

As befits its name, the handmade ice cream is deliciously good – very creamy and made from organic local milk.

The cakes are quirky and crafted with care from local ingredients by true artisans. They have a lovingly-prepared, homemade feel to them and the Whole Ice Cream Cake is predictably yummy.

We can also recommend the Blum’s Coffee Cake and the Lemon Cream Tart with Roast Rhubarb.

Want a conversation starter? Then order a Filthy Rat Bag Cake and ponder the rude cartoon.

Vegans are catered for with at least three vegan options; we have tasted the Vegan Hummingbird Cake and it was delish.

Burch and Purchese

Location: Collection at 647 Chapel Street, South Yarra / Tel: (03) 9827 7060.

Cakes are handmade to order and can be delivered to your premises.

You may already know Pastry Chef, Darren Purchese. He’s a regular on TV (Masterchef, in particular). His beautiful, handcrafted, painstakingly detailed creations have made him a star in his own right.

Aesthetically spectacular and immaculately crafted, these cakes, desserts and sweet treats have brought B&P many admirers. And that includes a number of celebrity endorsements.

The South Yarra shop is no longer open for walk-in customers, but the virtual store works well and will make extravagent desserts and handmade cakes to order.

How good is life when you can order an Explosive Raspberry Milk Chocolate or exquisite Mango, Strawberry and Lime Cheesecake delivered direct to your door? What a time to be alive!

Craving something traditional but with a modern take? Then check out the B&P Lamington Cake – it’s glorious.

Burch and Purchese cakes and desserts are not cheap, but they are magically decadent in their beauty and plate appeal.

Go on, give them a try – you know you deserve it…

Bittersweet Cakes

Location: 1/57 Willandra Drive, Epping VIC 3076 / Tel: 0400 993 845

Bittersweet Cakes’ shop is located in Epping, in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The bakery is particularly well-known for its wedding cakes and was recognised as the runner up for best wedding cake designer in Victoria by ABIA 2020.

Bittersweek Cakes specialise in crafting perfect centrepieces for any celebration. Winning consistently strong reviews for cakes that taste as amazing as they look, there is a genuine handcrafted feel to owner/decorator Monique’s creations.

All cakes are made to order and are given oodles of time, love and incredible attention to detail before departing the bakery as virtual works of art.

Special occasion cakes are the main game for Bittersweet, but you’ll also find wow-factor cookies and desserts too. Think mini lemon meringue, white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake and chocolate salted caramel tarts, donuts, cupcakes, cake pops, macarons, chocolates – the list is long.

Beatrix Bakes

Location: 688 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne 3051 / Tel: 0403 698 836. Eat-in or takeaway only. No made-to-order cakes or deliveries.

Established for more than a decade, in a small corner store in North Melbourne, owner Natalie Paull has been baking delicious cakes, meringues, pastries and sweet treats with small-business passion and intensity.

This is your small-scale, artisinal, craftsperson type of operation. The output feels, looks and tastes like it was made locally and with love.

Beatrix Bakes does not deliver or take orders and so you’ll have to visit the North Melbourne store to understand its appeal. The earlier you turn up, the better the choice will be. Trust us, the cakes are lovely.

There are no vegan options, unfortunately (Natalie hasn’t yet baked one good enough to put her name to); but there is a flourless chocolate cake that will work as a gluten-free dessert.

Fancy trying your hand at baking? Then consider Natalie’s cookbook Beatrix Bakes – it has been well-reviewed and has run to several print runs.

Beatrix Bakes is no longer a well-kept secret. This tiny operation is now well-known and much admired. Expect queues at peak times, but the wait will be worth it.

Editor’s Note: The Age is reporting that the Beatrix Bakes shop is due to close soon as the owner, Natalie Paull, takes a well-deserved break.

Harley Quinn birthday cake

At Jessicakes, no two cakes are ever the same. These are individual, bespoke and handcrafted works and bear little relation to mass-produced desserts.

Cupcakes start from $3 each and birthday cakes start from about $200. Cakes are priced according to design; therefore simple cakes are less expensive than more detailed cakes.

Your cake from Jessicakes can be made in a size to suit the number of guests you are expecting at your special occasion.  When a cake cannot be made smaller without compromising the chosen design, tiers made of polystyrene can be added.

Jessicakes is an artisan cake-maker of great imagination and skill. We can highly recommend.
