1000 Lire Pizza & Stuzzichini

You can also buy two pizzas and a portion of chips for only $40 which is the perfect choice for those diners who are on a first date or sharing their slices with friends.

Johnny, Vince and Sam’s Ristorante

If you are brave enough to offer pizza on Italian-centric Lygon Street, you need to have a point of difference. Well, Johnny, Vince and Sam’s certainly has that.
The brainwave of comedy group Sooshi Mango, the hook at this Italian restaurant is that you eat your food in a lovingly recreated ‘best room’ version of your adored Nonna’s home. It’s all there. The tiled floor, the wooden panels and orange-tinged wallpaper, the excessively decorative tableware and the garish, flea market paintings of everything from weeping children to Jesus himself.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that this spot is all show and no substance.
The staff are superb and knowledgeable and the food is affordable and delicious. And that includes the pizzas.
The You Like’A My Salami ($28) has plenty of heat from a combination of Hot Sopressa and Nduja – as well as Sugo Al Pomodoro, Olives, Roasted Peppers and Mozzarella. Meanwhile, the Farkena Vegetarian ($27) features Fried Eggplant and Ricotta Salata.
Gimmicky, definitely. But Johnny, Vince And Sam’s has queues out the door for a reason – it’s one of the best pizza places in Melbourne. And the cocktails are pretty great too!

They’ve done it again.
Having come in 4th in the Asia-Pacific region at the 50 Top Pizza Awards of 2023, Melbourne’s 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar ha followed up with 5th place in 2024. What’s more, they are also (for the 2nd time running) the makers of the best pizza in Australia according to the experts.
But then this is hardly a surprise. The team at 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar have been taking home trophies for their light, crisp, irresistible pizzas for some time now.
And the name? Well, 48 hours is how long the dough is allowed to rise. And the result is totally worth the wait.
Personally, our go to is the glorious Vaie On The Beach. A fabulous combo of Wild Mushrooms, Mozzarella, Pecorino Romano, Garlic, Parsley and a sprinkle of heady Truffle Oil. If you like the earthy allure of fungi, you’ll love this pizza.

Yes, the team mix a great cocktail and the Ravioli Di Mare ($46), stuffed with Prawn & Moreton Bay Bug in a Seafood Bisque with Cherry Tomatoes, is perfection, but the Pizzas are the house speciality.
Roman-style and scorched to blistered perfection, each one is a delight. We’re massively into the fiery Diavolina ($28) – a symphony of Italian Tomatoes, Mozzarella, Spicy Sopressa Salami, Nduja & Roasted Capsicum. Another great option includes the Ortolana ($28), featuring Italian Tomatoes, Mozzarella, Roasted Capsicum, Eggplant, Mushrooms, Caramelised Onion & Whipped Ricotta.

In fact, demand for their pizzas is such that the team has just opened a Takeaway venue, right next door. Grazia d’Asporto opens early in the morning and keeps pumping out the orders until 9 at night. During the day, the menu is more Panini based, but come evening, it’s all about those pizzas.

As someone who lived in Southern Italy many moons ago, as soon as a restaurant offers me an authentic Neapolitan Style Wood Fired Pizza, me interest is well and truly peaked. Tell me that you lovingly make you Dough daily and allow it to slow ferment and I’m beating your door down.
And at Matto Napoletano, they are as good as their word.
When the base is king – as any Italian will tell you – the toppings should be minimal, but quality. Such is the case with the exemplary Napoletana where San Marzano Tomato, Firo Di Latte, Oregano, Basil, EVO and feisty Anchovies shine. On the White Pizza side of the menu, our pick is the Tartufo Di Parma, featuring Fior Di Latte, funky Truffle Pesto with Grana Padano, House-Roasted Kipfler Potatoes, Italian Pork Sausage, Rosemary and Pepper. 100% brilliant.

Takeaway Pizza

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly self-explanatory minimalistic name of this pizzeria – it’s still one of the best pizza places in Melbourne. The chefs here are experts in the craft of slinging dough and crafting the best pizzas in the entire city.
Each pizza wheel is fermented over a three day period and topped with a slow-cooked tomato sauce and thick, smoky mozzarella. This name is undoubtedly ironic as there is nothing fast or haphazard about the preparation of these pizzas.
Fortunately, they cater to gluten-free and vegan eaters too and their late night slice bar is highly recommended to soak up any alcohol with a hearty slice of scrumptious pizza.
Incidentally, the team also runs the ever fun Dom’s Social Club at 1/301 Swanston St in the city. If you haven’t been to Dom’s, you should pop it on your ‘to do’ list. As at Takeaway Pizza over in Preston, the pizzas are great. However, this spot also has a great rooftop bar. All-in-all, it’s a 3 level journey through fabulous flavours, textures and excellent drinks.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it looks like the Tipo 00/Osteria Ilaria team have another success on their hands with their Lygon St, pizza joint. Housed in a typically classy space complete with stylish dining furniture and elegant stemware – all the crews familiar attention to detail is evident.
And the Pizzas are good. Very good, in fact.

If there is a better way to eat your greens that the Figlia restaurant Cavolo Nero Pizza ($28), we’ve yet to find it. Here, a slightly Pea Pesto is a great base for Asparagus, Gorgonzola & an Olive Tapenade.
