Blitz Bar – Our Review

Bespoke Acai Bowls where you have total control over how much you get and what you put on top? Yes please!

Blitz Bar let you do all the work, but the results are totally worth it. You want extra Peanut Butter? Go for it. Love Fresh Strawberries, but hate Goji Berries? No problem.

Surely it’s only a matter of time before this innovative spin on the hottest of breakfast trends crops up in more locations.

Blitz Bar

Location: 183 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, VIC 3144 Ph: (03) 9370 1629

If you’re tired of miserly dollops of Acai Puree and wish the server at your local health food joint wasn’t so tight with the Vegan Chocolate Spread, then you need to get over to Blitz Bar on Glenferrie Road, Malvern.

For here, it’s all about you. Literally.

Blitz Bar - Interior Whole

Yep. You do all the work – aside from cutting the fruit, pouring the seeds and toasting the granola – but this DIY approach is actually a reason to celebrate. Because at Blitz Bar, you do the pouring, measuring and piling. From the amount of Acai Puree that you want as a base, through to whether or not you’re leaning towards a virtuous Fresh Fruit and Hemp Seeds kind of day to a ‘load me up with Chocolate, Peanut Butter and Honey’ binge.

The Space

With a couple of tables out in the chaos of Malvern Road, the main action at Blitz Bar takes place either inside the welcoming cafe itself or in the wee courtyard out the back.

The interior design is less stark than in a lot of the current wave of fashionable, one-product-focused eateries dotted around Melbourne. The banquette running along the lefthand wall and the dinky, low stools are in a warm burnt orange.

Along the opposite side of the dining space is where the magic happens. There’s a tiled tones-of-beige tiled counter, topped with a chunky marble top housing a display case full of tempting white bowls. These bowls are ladened with toppings for your Acia Bowl.

And the Acai itself? Well, walk to the end of the counter and you’ll find a wall-fitted dispenser and a stack of paper bowls, waiting to be filled.

It’s all very clean, smart and – quite frankly – appealing.

If the weather is agreeable, the courtyard to the rear of the shop is a bright, sunny spot with checkered umbrellas in shades of orange. I suspect that come winter, a few burners may appear out there as having seating out the back gives a lots more dining space to this sleek, but small cafe.

Just up the road from Blitz Bar is Stan’s Deli, which features amongst our Best Sandwiches in Melbourne.

The Food

A healthy breakfast (or snack), curated by you.

The Acai blend itself it chilled to a perfect temperature and oozes from the Mr. Whippy-style dispenser as a thick, smooth ribbon. Rich and well-balanced, you could eat it on its own. But that would be a real waste of toppings.

Once you’ve got a layer of Acai smoothie in your disposable paper bowl, it’s off to the white bowls to to finesse your breakfast.

One the day we visited, the fruit choices included freshly cut Strawberries, Kiwi and Bananas. Over on the ‘dried’ area there were a couple of types of Granola, Coconut Flakes, Slithered Almonds, Cacao Nibs, Bucktinis and more. In addition to this, there’s Coyo (Organic, Coconut Milk Yoghurt), creamy Peanut Butter and a Chocolate Butter – amongst other things.

It’s totally up to you how you want to go.

And you also control the cost – to some extent. Once you are happy with your selection, you carry it up to the cash register where a smiling member of staff will weigh it for you. The cost of the Acai Bowls is tallied at $3.99 per 100g.
