Tips And Tricks
If you want to make sure that your curried mince comes out perfectly every time, follow these tips and tricks.
- Mince – If you are trying to watch your weight then choose a lean mince that has less than 5% fat. If you want the curry to be as flavoursome as possible go for a 10% fat mince which will have more of a meaty flavour. If you use lean mince, you can add more flavour by using a beef stock cube.
- Curry Powder – The majority of the flavour of this recipe comes from the curry powder. This is why it is important to use good quality curry powder. You can choose whatever curry powder you like – there are lots of different kinds and some people even mix up their own.
- Fresh Ingredients – You might be tempted to cut corners and use pre-minced garlic and ginger that comes in a tube or a jar. While this will save you time, you will be sacrificing a lot of the flavour that comes from using fresh ingredients.
- Cooking Time – This recipe is designed to be easy to make when you are in a rush. If you have some time to spare and you want to make it extra flavoursome and ensure that the meat is tender, cook the curry on a lower heat for longer.
- Leftovers – Your leftovers will keep in the refrigerator for several days in an airtight container. You can also freeze any leftovers and keep them for several months. Make sure you defrost and reheat the curry thoroughly before eating. If you have cooked rice to go alongside your curried mince, do not reheat this. You will need to cook fresh rice.

How Can You Customise This Recipe?
If you want to adjust this curried mince recipe to make it your own, there are several things you can try.
- Meat – This recipe uses ground beef, but you can switch this out for ground pork, chicken or turkey if you prefer. You could also use quorn mince if you want to make this into a vegetarian recipe.
- Vegetables – The onions contribute a lot of flavour to the curry, but you could use shallots if you wanted. You can also experiment with red and white onion to see how it changes the flavour. Peas go really well with this curry, but you could also use any other vegetable like zucchini, spinach or broccoli.
- Spice – Quite a lot of curry powder is used in this recipe which adds flavour but not warmth. If you like your curry with a kick you could use chilli oil instead of olive oil, or add chilli powder and/or chilli flakes when you add the curry powder. You could also use fresh chillies chopped up with the onion and garlic.
- Garnish – You can garnish this curry with fresh herbs like coriander (cilantro), with chopped green chillies, or with a wedge of lime.
- Side Dishes – A great way to adapt this curried mince recipe is by choosing your own side dish. You could serve this curried mince with plain rice, pilau rice, naan bread, poppadoms, chapati, potatoes, or any other side dish that you fancy.
