Cartel del Taco

Location: 290 Hawthorne Rd, Hawthorn, QLD 4171 Ph: (07) 3096 0516

Boldly, claiming to be Brisbane’s ‘First Authentic Mexican Street Tacqueria & Bar’, Cartel del Taco is light and bright.

Perch yourself at the green neon-lit bar and have a bash at one of the 9 House Margs. We’ve tried to sample them all, but tend to get stuck on the Acapulco Spritz ($22). It’s a heady mix of Mezcal, Prosecco, Aperol, Rosemary, Morita Syrup & Miguelito that has us hooked.

For the hungry, there’s plenty to choose from. Many of the Starters are for sharing, which is fine by us as we hate missing out on good food. The Authentic Guacamole ($14) comes with fabulously crunchy Tortilla Chips. For the carnivores, the Pork Ribs ($22) are lush – charred and swathed in Taramind and Chilli.

Of course, there are Tacos. The Fish Taco ($20 for 2) – with Chipotle Mayo, Fresh Slaw and more is a winner.

Lastly, we’re not used to seeing Lamb featuring on Mexican menus, but at Cartel del Taco, it appears a few times. One of those is the Lamb Barbacoa Shank ($38). Meltingly soft Lamb, matched with Tamarind, Chilli, Carrot Puree & Nopales and a pile of Corn Tortillas to mop it all up. It’s a must-try.

All-in-all, Cartel del Taco is one of the top Mexican restaurants in Brisbane.
